Bangladeshi film-maker Rubaiyat Hossain has been invited to join this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) as a jury member. The internationally acclaimed Bangladeshi film-maker will attend the prestigious award ceremony as one of the jurors, which will take place on November 29 in Brisbane, Australia.

Rubaiyat has been invited to be a part of the jury panel that will judge the Youth Feature Film, Animated Feature Film and Documentary Feature Film categories of APSA.

She will be accompanied by Luke Hetherington, acting executive officer of Lucas Film's VFX and Animation Studio Industrial Light and Magic.  The panel will be led by Mitzi Goldman, founder and CEO of Documentary Australia Foundation.

When contacted by the Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime Desk, Rubaiyat, who is currently in Copenhagen, she said: “Initially I was chosen by APSA for an exhibition, where I joined six other female directors from the Asia-Pacific region. Later, this year I was invited to be one of the judges for Youth, Animation and Documentary film categories.”

She said excerpts from her three films were shown in the exhibition, and she also participated in a panel discussion titled “Gender and Cinema."

“I feel really honoured to be a part of APSA and look forward to taking these challenges ahead,” she added.

APSA is an international cultural event supported by Brisbane City Council and managed by Brisbane Marketing. It is endorsed by foundation partners including Unesco and FIAPF – International Federation of Film Producers Associations.

Rubaiyat made her directorial debut in 2011 through “Meherjaan,” a film based on the 1971 Liberation War which stared veteran Indian actor Jaya Bachchan.

Her second film “Under Construction” won several awards both locally and abroad, earning her international recognition.

Her third film, “Made in Bangladesh,” awaits release next year. The film will highlight the role of the country’s garment sector and how it has made Bangladeshi women's empowerment and self-reliance possible through their struggle and success.

Actors Mustafa Monowar, Rakita Nandini Shimu, Dipannita Martin, Mayabi Maya, Novara Rahman, Parvin Peru, Shatabdi Wadud, Joyraj, Momena Chowdhury, Wahida Mallick Jolly and Samina Lutfa have been cast to play the central characters in the film.
