Eminent theatre personality, Ramendu Majumdar, was awarded a medal at the 70th anniversary of The International Theatre Institute (ITI) on November 23.

Thespian Ramendu Majumdar was honoured for his contribution to ITI. The event was held in the Hainan Opera House, in Haikou, Hainan, China.

The four-day anniversary celebration came to an end with a grand event. Ramendu Majumdar, a former president (worldwide) of the ITI, is now its honorary president.

In 2008, he was elected president of ITI, and was re-elected to the same position in 2011.

He was the second Asian to be elected to this position since ITI’s establishment in 1948 as an initiative of Unesco.

The seasoned theatre activist took Bangladeshi theatre to the world, by his immense contribution to creating interest in the medium throughout Bangladesh.

Talking about the award, Majumdar told the Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime: “It came as a surprise; we had no idea about the award.

“Seven honorary members of ITI also received the medal along with me,” he said. “I have been involved with ITI for the last 37 years which is a long time, and I believe ITI helped our theatre reach globally.”

The co-founder of the Bangladesh Centre of ITI said that so far, the ITI Bangladesh chapter has organized eleven international events where theatre personalities from various countries came to Bangladesh, which created a cultural bridge for local young theatre actors and enthusiasts.

“Also, youngsters participated in many international conventions through ITI, which were learning experiences for them.”

“ ‘The World of Theatre’ is an important publication of ITI, and the biannual publication is very helpful to learn more about theatre,” said Majumdar while discussing the importance of ITI.

ITI has been publishing “The World of Theatre” since 1986, and a series of publications contribute with their articles about the actual theatre and performing arts scene in ITI member countries.

Majumdar studied English literature at the University of Dhaka. He is the chief of a theatre troupe named Theatre and has been editing a quarterly magazine, “Pottrika,” for the last 48 years. His troupe is busy with rehearsing for two new productions.

“We stage  five of our old productions regularly; however, we are also planning to bring two new productions on stage by March next year.”

The renowned cultural personality was the recipient of ‘Ekushey Padak' in 2009.
