This year has been a good one for the music industry of Bangladesh

App-based music streaming service “Imagine Radio” was officially launched in Bangladesh on December 17, with over 10 million songs from local and international musicians legally available for music lovers

This year has been a good one for the music industry of Bangladesh, especially the rock music scenario which was quite eventful. A few noted events of the year included the launch of a new streaming app, numerous numbers of bands performing in concerts both at home and abroad, Bangladesh Musical Bands Association (BAMBA) concert on social issues, and many more. Moreover, two local bands, AvoidRafa and Powersurge, performed in Kolkata, India for Christmas this year, along with other Indian bands. 

Let’s look back at some of the phenomenal events and achievements of the country’s music industry in 2018.

Imagine Radio

App-based music streaming service “Imagine Radio” was officially launched in Bangladesh on December 17, with over 10 million songs from local and international musicians legally available for music lovers. The streaming service will bring a massive change to our music industry as the artistes will be paid royalty as per a mutual agreement between both parties. With a motto to promote independent artistes, and musicians, Imagine Radio will also act as a launch-pad. Their list of special services include album release, promotion, brand consultation, copyright etc. Subsequently, the app seems like a new hope for the music industry and young musicians. 

LSD video game 

Emerging post grunge rock band Liquid State Drive (LSD) released a mobile video game, titled “LSD: Last Survival Days,” becoming the first Bangladeshi band to have an android video game along with the debut album. The game ranked second in the Google Play Store. The four characters of the game were designed based on the basic characteristics of the band members, while the game features some of the songs from the band’s debut album. The characters too, have been named after them as well. 

Wacken Metal Battle

It was historic moment for the metal music of our country, when metal band, Trainwreck won the first Wacken Metal Battle Bangladesh chapter, and became the first band to represent Bangladesh in “Bangalore Open Air” in February 2019. Approximately, 77 bands sent their demos to the Bangalore Open Air committee from which five bands were selected. Trainwreck will perform on February 9 at the “Bangalore Open Air,” sharing the same platform with other bands from different countries. 

Bangladesh Drum Day

Bangladesh Drum Day was another major event of the year as it brought all drummers under one roof. The event, first of its kind turned out to be one of the phenomenal events as after such a long time the home of rock music, the Russian Cultural Centre (RCC) had a houseful show. Only drummers were in the spotlight on this show which opened a new horizon for the both musicians and music lovers of the country. 

Rock Strata reunion show DVD launch 

In September, the pioneering Bangladeshi heavy metal band, Rock Strata released their reunion show DVD inan event launched at the Bashundhara City's Star Cineplex. Rock Strata's reunion gig "One Last Live" was also shown on the silver screen during the event. In 2015, the group performed in their reunion gig called, “One Last Live" at the Krishibid Institute Bangladesh in Dhaka, and the fans of the band waited for the DVD of this reunion show for over two years.

Warfaze becomes advocate of Unicef

Popular band Warfaze became Unicef’s Advocate for “Child Rights.” They signed in a contract with UNICEF for two years. The announcement was made at the 14th Meena Awards 2018. 

When it comes to being responsible for social causes, Warfaze has always been always active to get involved with such issues. The band first worked for victims of natural disasters. 

They were also the advocate for acid attack victims and child rights; the reason why Unicef picked Warfaze to be the advocate for child rights.
