The tenth edition of “Chobi Mela,” begins on Thursday on a full scale. The festival will start with an opening rally from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute at 10am, following an inauguration ceremony to be held at Chhayanaut Auditorium.

Yesterday in a press conference, festival director Shahidul Alam and the curatorial team gave a briefing about the festival. The conference was held at Drik Gallery in Dhanmondi.

“We have always tried to recognize prodigies of the photography world of Bangladesh over the years, and this year we will also honour one of the great photographers of our country with a lifetime achievement award,” said Shahidul Alam, during the press conference.

“Chobi Mela has and will continue to be about bringing people together and, more importantly, bringing them to Bangladesh,” he added.

This year the photography extravaganza features some amazing events. The theme of the tenth instalment of Chobi Mela is “Place.”

To explore the theme, artistes from diverse backgrounds such as painting, drawing, architecture, sculpture, photography, video and sound installations, will showcase their works in various mediums. These projects are being curated by guest curator Zihan Karim.

The list of curators includes ASM Rezaur Rahman, Munem Wasif, Sarker Protick, and Tanzim Wahab with the guest curators.

The under construction Drik-Pathshala  building on Panthapath is the main venue of the festival, while the rest of the venues are located in the Dhanmondi area.

Talks, panel discussions, and curated slideshows will be held at the Goethe Institut. As part of the festival, film screening sessions will take place at Alliance Française de Dhaka auditorium.

Pathshala South Asian Media Institute is an educational venue where workshops and portfolio reviews are held.

This year a total number of 33 print exhibitions will be open to all. These exhibitions will display works by 44 artistes from 21 countries.

One of the main attractions of the festival is an exhibition on “Rashid Talukder (1939-2011): A Life’s Work.” The exhibition is based on works by late Rashid Talukder, a legendary photojournalist of Bangladesh.

The talks by five artistes will include eminent writer Arundhati Roy, world renowned German publisher and bookmaker Gerhard Steidl, Indian singer, songwriter and music researcher, Moushumi Bhowmik, and pioneering Indian photographer and photojournalist Raghu Rai, and many more.

The newly formed advisory board of Chobi Mela consists of prominent Indian economist and Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen, former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Khondokar Ibrahim Khaled, human rights activist Khushi Kabir, Nepali publisher, writer and editor, Kunda Dixit, Indian photographer Raghu Rai, economist Rehman Sobhan, literary critic, activist and historian, Serajul Islam Choudhury, and human rights activist and former advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, Sultana Kamal.

Mobile exhibitions on rickshaw will travel all over the city including remote locations throughout the festival. The 10-day festival will continue till March 9.
