'The Last Post Office' is a magic realism infused fairy-tale with an evil twist

Aung Rakhine directed short film “The Last Post Office” will participate in the Tampere Film Festival in Finland, which is considered to be one of the best short film festivals in the world. This short film was picked up from more than 4,000 submissions in the international category, where 59 films from 47 countries will compete.

The Tampere Film Festival will run from March 6-10, and will feature a competition for Finnish and international films, and a wide variety of specialist fringe events presenting short films from around the world. This international event will also bring various seminars, workshops and debates for film professionals and their audiences to venues throughout the city, according to the Finland Festivals website.

Directed by Aung Rakhine, written by Rajib Rafe and co-produced by Rubaiyat Hossain and Aadnan Imtiaz Ahmed, “The Last Post Office” is a magic realism infused fairy-tale with an evil twist. The 17-minute-long film was shot in Bangla, and is the director’s second, after "Mor Thengari - My Bicycle,” the first Chakma language film of Bangladesh.

Last year “The Last Post Office” premiered at the Locarno Film Festival’s Open Doors section, and participated at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France. The latter is considered to be the best short film festival in the world.

Ever since the Clermont-Ferrand, the director Aung Rakhine had been receiving invitations from various prestigious competitions in the world.

Aung told the Dhaka Tribune Showtime: “We are currently focused on making the film more accessible for viewers from every corner of life. I made the film to check if I could take the challenge of making a film on magic-realism, something that is not widely practiced in Bangladesh. After I saw the love it has received, I feel confident about my future work.”

Aung is currently working on two films, one on the Rakhine community, and the other is on Mro. “If all goes well, the shooting for film on the Mro community will begin this year, and will be completed in the next,” Aung added.

“The Last Post Office” features actors Ashish Khondker, Shariar Ferdous Shazeeb and Ashok Bepari in the lead roles. The film was shot by Barakat Hossain Polash and the sound design was by Ripon Nath. “The Last Post Office” was produced by Khona Talkies.
