Legendary Lalon geeti singer Farida Parveen, received the Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal Award at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of University of Dhaka (DU) yesterday.
The Dhaka University manages the Feroza Begum Memorial Trust Fund which gives this prestigious music award every year.
Farida Parveen was handed the award by Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University, Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, chief guest at the ceremony, according to a press release. In his address, Dr Akhtaruzzaman thanked ACI Foundation Chairman, M Anis Ud Dowla, for his patronage of the Feroza Begum Memorial Trust Fund. The VC also expressed hopes that the next generation of music artistes would be inspired by this award.
M Anis Ud Dowla, is the brother of late Feroza Begum. In his speech he praised Dhaka University for their part in this initiative. He also recounted some memories of Feroza's contribution, sacrifice, and devotion to music.
Upon receiving the award Farida said: "I am really honoured to get an award named after Feroza Apa. I feel proud of it."
Khondaker Anika Islam who had the highest BA Honours CGPA this year at the DU Music Department, was also given the award for her stellar academic performance.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Treasurer, Professor Dr Abu Md Delwar Hossain and Treasurer of Dhaka University, Professor Dr Md Kamal Uddin, were special guests at the ceremony.
The Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium was packed with teachers, students, cultural activists, singers, poets, writers, and a number of media personalities.
Notably, acclaimed singers Sabina Yasmin, Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, and Runa Laila have been past recipients of the prestigious Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal Award.
