Copyright battle between Shironamhin, Avash

Ex-Shironamhin singer Tanzir Tuhin sends video message to fans about the issue

Update : 09 Oct 2019, 09:30 PM

Allegations of copyright infringement has surfaced against rock band Avash, formed by former Shironamhin vocalist Tazrin Tuhin, who performed songs by his former band in Avash shows.

Tuhin, who was also one of the founding members of popular rock band Shironamhin, left the band in 2017 and formed Avash two months later.

Avash has been active in the band music arena with its original songs, but they also perform a few Shironamhin songs at live concerts on regular basis, which has created the conflict between the two bands.

A couple of months ago, Ziaur Rahman, one of the founding members of Shironamhin, filed a complaint against Avash at the Copyright Office Bangladesh.

The Copyright Office asked Avash not to perform Shironamhin songs at their live shows.

But Tuhin and his band Avash kept performing those songs, which led to Shironamhin filing a petition with a lower court in Dhaka.

Last month, the lower court ruled a stay order against Avash on performing those songs.

On October 7, Tuhin posted a video message on his Facebook profile. In the video, he spoke to his fans to present his side of the story.

“The ruling was given at a lower court, which we plan to appeal against with the High Court within October 22. This is not the final verdict,” Tuhin told his fans.

“Everybody should know a few facts. As founding members of Shironamhin, Tusher, Farhan and I wrote and composed around 21 song. If we consider ‘performers’ rights,’ the number will increase. We submitted proper evidence at the Copyright Office, asking for rights. For some unknown reasons, the Copyright Office has kept it quiet.”

Tuhin further informed that there was a case on the songs of the first three Shironamhim albums, currently on trial at the High Court. The court issued a stay order in the case, between Shironamhin and G-Series.

He claimed that Shironamhin did not inform the lower court about the case with G-Series.
