Revered actor, writer and director Humayun Kabir Sadhu passed away around 12:30am yesterday at Square Hospital in Dhaka.

Film-maker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki confirmed the news of his death on social media at 2:04am.

Sadhu's namaz-e-janaza was held at Rahim Metal Jame Mosque in Tejgaon after Jumma prayers. He was later buried in the graveyard near the mosque.

Earlier on October 2, Sadhu fell sick during shooting in Dhaka. His elder sister took him to Chittagong, where his family resides. On October 5, Sadhu was admitted to Chittagong's Park View Hospital, where the doctors diagnosed him with an infection in his blood.

Due to his deteriorating health, Sadhu was brought back to Dhaka on October 13, where he was admitted in the Bangladesh Specialized Hospital. Medical check-ups revealed that he had suffered a brain stroke, and needed an emergency surgery.

Sadhu's family members brought him back home, and started making preparations to fly him to India for treatment.

However, when Sadhu's health deteriorated even further, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Square Hospital on Sunday.

Right after reaching the hospital, he suffered a second stroke. He was on life support until his last breath.

Family, friends and well-wishers were shocked by the news of his untimely death.

Farooki, deeply shocked and grieving, said in his Facebook post that he had first met Sadhu at a script-writing workshop in Chittagong.

“You gave us time to prepare (for your passing). Maybe we did prepare. But Sadhu, people can never fully prepare for the passing of a loved one!” Farooki’s post said.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune Showtime yesterday, film-maker Mahmud Didar said: “Sadhu was like my own child. He played a character, named Sam, in my film Beauty Circus. He was very focused in his work. He was also a positive thinker. During shooting, when others saw problems, he would find potential. He was a very inspirational friend, and a great story-teller."

Born and raised in Chittagong, Sadhu moved to Dhaka in 2001 to make a career in television and films. Eventually, he became an assistant director to Farooki. He also began writing stories and scripts around the same time. He also wrote a book, titled Nonai, which came out in the 2019 Ekushey Book Fair.

Sadhu made his acting debut in Farooki's film Made in Bangladesh. Since then, he had appeared in innumerable TV dramas, films, television films and commercials. Sadhu's most remembered work is Unmanush, a TV film directed by Farooki. The story of the film was written by Sadhu himself, and was later made into a script by Farooki. The film depicted the harsh realities faced by a person of stunted stature.

In 2017, Sadhu debuted as a director in his critically acclaimed television drama Chikon Pin er Charger.
