The court also issued a rule asking the related respondent why the case proceedings against Nawshaba should not be nullified

Update : 20 Nov 2019, 09:16 PM

The High Court has stayed the trial proceedings of a case filed against actor Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed under the Digital Security Act, for six months.

The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Bhismadev Chakrabarti issued the order on Wednesday after hearing a petition.

The court also issued a rule asking the related respondent why the case proceedings against Nawshaba should not be nullified.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua stood for Nawshaba and Deputy Attorney General Aminur Rahman Chowdhury Tuku represented the state.

The lawyer for the actor said the case was filed under the ICT Act on August 5, 2018, while the Digital Security Act came into effect on October 8, 2018, abolishing the ICT act. But on April 30, 2018, the charge sheet was submitted regarding the case and was accepted on September 3, making the case proceedings illegal.

On August 4, 2018, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Nawshaba for allegedly spreading rumors on social media during the road safety movement. A day later, RAB filed a case against Nawshaba with Uttara West police station under the ICT Act. On August 21, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted her bail.
