Legendary Indian songwriter, music director, lyricist, writer, and poet Salil Chowdhury’s 94th birthday was on November 19. Jaltaranga, a Bangladeshi musical troupe, organized an event titled “Prithibir Garita Thamao” on Friday, commemorating the life and work of Salil.

The event featured discussions about the composer, and performed some of his classic songs, and poems.  It was held at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium at Central Public Library, Shahbag, Dhaka.

A gallery full of audience enjoyed the event and performances of his famous tracks like “Gourishringo Tuleche Shir,” “Pothe Ebar Namo Sathi,” “Duronto Ghurnir Ei Legechhe Pak,” and “Ami Jhorer Kache Rekhe Gelam.”

Zakir Hossain Tapan and his wife Tanveera Ashraf Shyama were the music directors of the event.

Jaltaranga General Secretary and lead organizer of the event, Zakir Hossain Tapan told the Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime: “I am a huge Salil fan since my childhood, and grew up listening to this amazing composer. From that love we decided to commemorate the birthday of this legendary musician to serve as a lesson for our young generation who are obsessed with Western pop but do not know our own backyard.”

“The cultural organizations always focus on Rabindranath and Nazrul but they are not the only legendary Bangali musicians, and Jaltaranga aims to focus on that. Even the audience told us that they never knew these timeless tracks were created by Salil. We are planning to organize and feature more Bangali talents like Salil very soon,” added Tapan.

Born in Gazipur, West Bengal, Salil Chowdhury predominantly composed music for Bangla, Hindi, and Malayalam films. Considered to be a master in various genres of music, Salil is most fondly remembered for re-shaping, and promoting Bangla songs in the most diverse ways possible. Salil produced nearly 2,000 songs in 11 different languages spoken in India. He was also accomplished in playing the flute, esraj, violin, and piano.

The group, duet, and solo performances were done by Shantanu Saha Ray, Alpona Bandopadhyay, Jakir Sumon, Masuda Khan, Shamim Aminur Rahman, Shefta Alam, Parvin Yasmin, Ena Ray, Lipika Taposhi and others.

Each of the tracks were performed by Jaltaranga members.

Artistes Tapan Mahmud, Zeenat Rehana, and Linu Billah were the special guests at the event.

As a musical troupe and a cultural organization, Jaltaranga started its journey from October 2014. It is renowned for organizing stand-out programs with a beautiful melody. The group consists of 20 enthusiastic singers. The chairperson of the organization is Masuda Khan.

Dhaka Tribune was the media partner of the event.
