'It is the first part of my Liberation War trilogy'

Bangladeshi filmmaker Razib Ahsan’s debut feature film Namhin Gotrohin, based on the 1971 Liberation War, will be released on December 16 next year marking the 49th Victory Day of Bangladesh. The film’s director confirmed the news with Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime.

The black and white film is based on a short story of the same title written by eminent author Hasan Azizul Huq. The storyline of the film depicts a story of how a civilian saw the horrors of the bloody war one night during December 1971.

Formation of the project

When asked how this film came together Razib said: “My film is based on one of the favourite stories by one of my favourite authors. I wanted to make a film on this story ever since I first read it. It is the first part of my Liberation War trilogy.”

The project primarily received funding for a short film from the Bangladesh government last year. Razib, the film’s director and producer, later on, decided to release the film in both a short and a feature-length version.

He said: “A few years back I asked the author for his written consent and started writing the screenplay. As the film was based on a short story so I wrote two screenplays and decided to make both a short and feature version of the film and finally did.”

The film will portray the devastated condition of the civilians during our liberation war from a single unnamed person’s (played by acclaimed theatre actor and director Ratan Dev) experiences while he returns home through the city one night. The war-torn city makes it hard for the protagonist to find his way back to his own home.

The director said: “The film has almost no dialogue as it will be completely a visual and sound design based story, which is a new form in Bangladeshi filmmaking in my opinion. The audience will hopefully enjoy it.”

The current state of the film

Razib said that they had to postpone their initial plans to release the film this year due to some location-based issues. He said: “We completed the final cut of the black and white film in September as we were having some trouble finding the proper locations which will match the 1971 timeline of the story.

“The dubbing and basic sound design (done by Sayba Talukder) is complete. We are now working on the final mix and colour correction which will be completed within next week,” added the director.

The film will start competing in the international film festival circuit from this month up until its local release in December 2020.

Namhin Gotrohin was shot by Ripon Chaudhury while Siam Raihan was the editor and executive producer of the project.

Anupam Ghagra Momin and Saiyeed Shahjada Al Kareem are the assistant directors. Studio Lonthon was the film's line and post-production partner.

Upcoming projects

Razib has recently completed the script of Ekattorer Din Ratri, the second part of his Liberation War trilogy, and currently looking for producers for the project. He said: “I will start shooting the next part of my trilogy soon and hopefully release it on the 50th Victory Day of Bangladesh on December 16, 2021.”

“I am still working on the screenplay of the third part and targeting to complete it within December 2022,” he added.

Razib’s previous short film Puppet was based on the play The Dumb Waiter, written by renowned British playwright Harold Pinter. The film premiered at the 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival and was also officially screened at more than 15 international film festivals.
