Memorandum requesting government initiative to be sent to the cultural affairs and information ministries

The Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB) will organize a human chain to raise awareness and demanding government initiative to protect and preserve the ancestral homes of legendary film-makers Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen in the country.

FFSB also plans to send a memorandum to the Cultural Affairs Ministry and the Information Ministry in this regard.

The human chain will be formed in front of the National Museum in Dhaka at 4pm on Saturday, according to a FFSB press release.

Prominent film-makers, film researchers and writers, film teachers, and other film personalities will take part in the human chain, along with film and cultural activists.

Satyajit Ray's ancestral home is located in the Mosua village of Kotiyadi police station in Kishoreganj. The press release added that Satyajit's home also bears additional historical importance, as it also housed Satyajit's father Sukumar Ray and grandfather Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury.

Similarly, Ritwik Ghatak's ancestral home is located in Miapara of Rajshahi city. The house also contains memorabilia of Ritwik's brother Manish Ghatal and neice Mohashweta Debi, who were also renowned for their creativity.

Mrinal Sen's ancestral home is located in Jhiltuli of Faridpur district. This house also contains memorabilia of many creative people, who hail from greater Faridpur region.

FFSB said the government must take immediate steps to protect and preserve these sites. It said the sites should be turned into museums, and film centres – named after the film-makers - near them.

According to the press release, FFSB believes that these homes are historical landmarks for the nation's cultural history. The works of these three film-makers have enriched the quality of world cinema, and thereby has enriched our culture as well. Their paternal homes symbolize the roots of these three legends.

It also noted that the protection of such landmarks will help enrich and glorify the nation's history. The protection and preservation of these landmarks will make both the current generation and the future ones confident about their nation's cultural heritage.
