Written and directed by Priyanka Banerjee, Devi poignantly sheds light on the nuances of sisterhood

Devi unfolds in a single room, where nine fierce women from different walks of life find shelter from a reality that has thus far oppressed them. They laugh, bicker, and occasionally shed a few tears.

Their lives are stuck in an agonizing limbo between the perils of oblivion and the assault of memory. Consequently, a profound sense of sisterhood emerges out of their shared suffering and releases them from the patriarchal cage.

Written and directed by Priyanka Banerjee, Devi poignantly sheds light on the nuances of sisterhood and does not shy away from celebrating a roomful of women for their quirks.

Now and then, the differences in their age, caste, language and literacy are tactfully brought into the limelight as they lunge at each other during glimpses of unmistakable hostility and resentment. Devi bolsters the argument that women are not a uniform group with identical interests regardless of  the oppression they all might have been subjected to at one point or another.

With the help of a brilliant ensemble cast including Kajol, Neha Dhupia, Neena Kulkarni, Shruti Haasan, Mukta Barve, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Sandhya Mhatre, Rama Joshi and Rashaswini Dayama, Banerjee's debut short film will resound for years to come.

Popular Bollywood actor Kajol said to the press: "I couldn’t have chosen a better subject for my first short film. It’s a poignant film, one that needs to be shared with the world, especially today.

"In today’s times when gender discrimination, abuse and violence are being spoken about vociferously, films like Devi are far more relevant and I am glad to have got the opportunity to participate."

Produced by Electric Apples Entertainment, the short film explores powerful themes, such as the growing instances of sexual violence carried out against women in India, the barriers to justice that victims grapple with, and the failure of a Goddess-worshipping nation to protect its women. Devi was released on Monday.
