The Hannibal star is in talks to replace Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3
After losing the libel case against British Tabloid The Sun, Johnny Depp was asked by the producing studio of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Warner Bros, to resign, which the actor complied with.
According to Deadline, Mads Mikkelsen is now most likely to bag the 'Dark Wizard' role in the third installment of the series as he is director David Yates' first choice.
Colin Farrell, who has previously played Grindelwald, was also considered. However, the actor cannot reprise his role due to prior commitments on the new Batman film.
Actors Joseph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor were briefly considered for the role as well.
In 2016, Depp first made his appearance as Grindelwald, taking over from Colin Farrell in the final scene of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He played the part again in 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Warners Bros is determined to keep the film on track through the recasting process. The shooting has been already delayed due to the pandemic from March to October, 2020.
