The actor called the online petition, which received more than one million signatures as of today, a 'paid campaign'
An online petition, launched by fans of Johnny Depp, which received more than a million signatures, is calling for the removal of Amber heard from the Aquaman sequel.
After losing the libel case against British Tabloid The Sun, Johnny Depp was asked by the producing studio of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Warner Bros, to resign, which the actor complied with. Now his fans are asking for Heard’s removal.
Heard, who plays Aquaman’s love interest Hera, has reacted to the petition, calling it a ‘paid campaign.’ The UK trial will not have any impact on the franchise, said the actor.
“Paid rumours and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality. Only the fans actually made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen. I’m excited to get started next year.”
Previously, Depp called the UK court’s decision ‘surreal.’ However, he stepped down from the Fantastic Beasts franchise upon request from the producing studio.
“My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time," Depp said.
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is now most likely to bag the 'Dark Wizard' role in the third installment of the series as he is director David Yates' first choice.
Depp, who enjoys greater stardom than Heard and is one the biggest actors from the 2000s, received support from his co-stars and colleagues, including Henela Bonham Carter, JK Rowling, Vanessa Paradis and Javier Bardem throughout the legal battle. Amber Heard, on the other hand, is facing a litany of death threats from the public for quite some time.
