The duo will be reuniting for the film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s 1932 novel 'Laughter in the Dark'

The co-creator of the Netflix’s most-watched scripted limited series The Queen’s Gambit, Scott Frank, is developing an adaptation of Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Laughter in the Dark, with Anya Taylor-Joy set to star.

In an interview with The Ringer’s The Watch podcast, Frank said, his upcoming project is “a valentine to movies, I’m going to do it as a film noir and a movie within a movie. And it’s a really nasty, wonderful, thriller.”

The novel revolves around a mutually parasitic relationship between a middle aged art critic and a 17-year-old aspiring model. Laughter in the Dark shares similar themes with Navokov’s widely-read and censored Lolita, which was released more than two decades later.

Aside from Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film Lolita, Navokov’s works have been rarely adapted well on the big screen.  Scott Frank, who was nominated for an Oscar for penning the screenplays of acclaimed films Out of Sight and Logan, might pull off the second successful Navokov film adaptation, with the help of the wonderful Anya Taylor-Joy.

In the origin story of the iconic action hero Furiosa, a prequel to action film Mad Max: Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy is also set to star in the title role, previously brought to screen by Charlize Theron.
