The masterclass on ‘Art of Indie: Formula to Fail’ was conducted by the renowned writer-director and cinematographer, Kamar Ahmad Simon.
The title ‘Art of Indie: Formula to Fail’ might initially sound a bit negative, but if one has a deep understanding of this topic, it comes with a twist, which is interesting. That was similar to how this fantastic session was carried out from a class lecture to a very interactive and informative one where the young, aspiring filmmakers actively participated.

This masterclass was designed to cater to all the young learners with a keen interest in filmmaking, production procedures and presenting it to the right platform. As indie filmmakers, they often face many challenges in various aspects. The pre-production to distribution and showcasing it at different festivals are very crucial. There is a significant gap in the film industry in terms of sharing and empowering students with guidance. This masterclass focused on those facts where the expert shared views and prepared the rising filmmakers for the challenges they might face.
The discussion in the masterclass started with a brief description of independent filmmaking in Bangladesh. Then the guest shared his film experiences, challenges, and achievements with the participants. According to him, independent films are for those who do not have any financial or device support. Furthermore, he suggested the young filmmakers should ‘listen’ more, which is the core of value and to approach something, ‘preconception’ would not avail. He beautifully concluded his speech by saying, ‘Independent film is destined to fail if you are not ready to fail’.
DIMFF 2022 Festival Coordinator Sambitul Islam Ornob successfully arranged this masterclass where more than one hundred participants joined. Festival Director Faeeqa Hossain confirmed Dhaka Tribune as Media Partner on this event.
