One of the biggest names working today in media, Chanchal CHowdhury was slammed by religious fanatics for his mother’s day post.

To celebrate mother’s day on May 9, the “Aynabaji” actor posted a photo with his mother, Sharmila Chowdhury, who was seen wearing vermilion over her forehead.

The photo sparked off an outcry on social media where some people were surprised to discover Chanchal’s religion and resorted to call him names.

Both Chanchal and his mother were targeted online by a group of religious zealots, who made it a point to harass the actor for following a different religion in a Muslim-majority country.

In response, Chanchal wrote, “Brothers and sisters, does it matter whether I am a Hindu or Muslim? Let’s put an end to these discussions. Let us be human first.”

Many celebrities and social media personalities were taken aback by the intensity of the campaign against Chanchal and took to their respective accounts to speak against cyber-bullying.

Actor Rownak Hasan said, “I strongly condemn those who are making these radical and abhorrent comments online. I hope that they are swiftly brought to justice.”

“Ignorant religious fanatics always commit unacceptable acts over religion,” wrote veteran actor Fazlur Rahman Babu.

On Monday, Chanchal shared a poem he wrote and recited, an excerpt of which read, "Who are you to feel entitled to 'save' religion? Why do you commercialize religion? All religions seek to help humanity. Do you feel better after commercializing yours?"

Ashna Habib Bhabna, Masud Hasan, Tahsan Khan, Moushumi Hamid, Richie Solaiman and Zakia Bari Mamo among others condemned the backlash Chanchal received.
