Rabindranath Tagore, hailed as the Bard of Bengal, was a controversial figure in Pakistan. All works of the late poet, writer and composer was banned in the country by Ayub Khan's Information and Broadcasting minister Khwaja Shahabuddin and East Pakistan governor Monem Khan in 1967.
As a result, Rabindra sangeet was banned in erstwhile East Pakistan.
Netizens were thus taken by surprise when a brief clip from a 2019 Pakistan series started making the rounds of all social media platforms, featuring Tagore’s classic love song “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay."
Even though the clip is old, it caught the eye of a Bengali named Adil Hussein, who then shared the clip on his Twitter and Instagram handles.
Directed by Mehreen Jabbar and starring Yumna Zaidi, TV serial “Dil Kya Karay” featured the song. Singer Sharvari Despande lent his voice.
Produced by 7th Sky Entertainment, the series featured Feroze Khan and Yumna Zaidi in lead roles.
Shahzad Ali composed the original soundtrack of “Dil Kya Karay” and Saad Sultan arranged the music. Mustafa Zahid and Sharvari Deshpande have both contributed to the soundtrack.
