Musician Kabir Suman was rushed to the hospital this week after he had complained of sore throat, high fever and severe breathing issues.

Fans around the world were saddened by the unfortunate news and took to social media to pray for the singer’s health.

The 72-year-old has been undergoing treatment at the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata since June 28. A two-member team led by Dr Arunava Sengupta is currently monitoring his health.

The singer reached out to his fans on July 1 and reassured everyone that he was doing better.

“I had a cold for some time. But from Sunday morning, I could not swallow anything. I had a really sore throat. And I could not eat at all,” Suman said. “I called a doctor, and he urged me to get hospitalized.”

The “Tomake Chai” singer also sang a few lines for his well-wishers during the Facebook Live chat.

He took a moment to thank the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee for her attempts to preserve West Bengal culture. The Chief Minister earlier visited Suman in the hospital.

The singer, who gained acclaim with early albums “Tomake Chai” and “Boshe Anko,” is regarded today as one of the pioneers of alternative Bangla music of the ‘90s.

Singers Anjan Dutta, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Silajit Majumder, and bands like Chandrabindoo cite Kabir Suman as a major influence.
