The film will have its premiere on October 4
The first trailer for “C’mon, C’mon,” the latest feature from Mike Mills, dropped today, featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Gaby Hoffman in the lead roles.
This latest A24 drama sees writer-director Mike Mills returning to the director’s chair, having previously directed critically acclaimed dramas "Beginners” and “20th Century Women," and guiding Pheonix for his latest role as a kindhearted radio journalist.
The official synopsis reads, "A soulful Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny, a kindhearted radio journalist deep into a project in which he interviews children across the U.S. about our world’s uncertain future. His sister, Viv (a marvelously intuitive Gaby Hoffmann), asks him to watch her 8-year-old son, Jesse (Woody Norman, in one of the most affecting breakout child performances in years), while she tends to the child’s father, who’s suffering from mental health issues. After agreeing, Johnny finds himself connecting with his nephew in ways he hadn’t expected, ultimately taking Jesse with him on a journey from Los Angeles to New York to New Orleans."
The cast includes child artist Woody Norman, "Halt and Catch Fire” star Scoot McNairy and “Daily Show” writer Jaboukie Young-White.
The film is currently competing for the New York Film Festival’s top honour with “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen, “Parallel Mothers” from Pedro Almodóvar, and “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter.”
Joaquin Phoenix is next set to appear in Ari Aster’s “Disappointment Blvd.,” which is currently in production. " C'mon C'mon" marks his return to playing "normal' everyday man rather than antiheroes.
