Bangladesh Navy’s Mohammad Ibrahim broke a 21-year record in the shotput event at the National Athletics as he clinched the gold medal on the opening day of the competition with a 14.53m throw.

The previous record of 14.25m was set in 1997 by Mozaffar Hossain.

Ibrahim expressed delight after breaking the record.

“It was my dream to break the record. It became reality [Thursday]. I am really happy. It was possible due to the efforts of Navy authority and my coach,” said Ibrahim.

“Mozaffar bhai had the record for 21 years. I am really happy after breaking his record.

“Navy appreciate the players’ efforts. We are getting enough facilities and our trainings are done smoothly. Navy not only want the athletes to represent them, they also want us to represent our country in the international arena.”
