It was the combination of Mahmudul Hossain Joy (58 not out) and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury (12 not out) that formed the game-winning partnership behind the chasing down of the target of 257 set by the young Lions with 13 deliveries to spare at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar Thursday

The Bangladesh U-19 team once again put up an impressive display with both bat and ball as they defeated visiting England U-19 by five wickets to win the three-match youth one-day series 2-0 with one game left to play.

It was the combination of Mahmudul Hossain Joy (58 not out) and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury (12 not out) that formed the game-winning partnership behind the chasing down of the target of 257 set by the young Lions with 13 deliveries to spare at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar Thursday.

England decided to bat first on a good surface.

Their openers Ben Charlesworth (39) and Will Smeed (43) put on an 87-run partnership before the former was dismissed by Ashraful Islam.

From there England lost their other opener Smeed, but captain Jamie Smith (48) and Lewis Goldsworthy (73) formed a 111-run partnership before Mrittunjoy dismissed both of them.

With England looking for quick runs at the death overs, Mrittunjoy kept things quiet as he took two more wickets and finished as the most successful bowler of the match with 4/50 off his 10 overs and England ended with 256/7 in their 50 overs.

In reply, Bangladesh made an excellent start with openers Tanzid Hasan (70) and Prantik Nawrose Nabil (31) adding 88 at over a run a ball.

Tanzid was exceptional with his strokeplay as he scored the runs taking just 46 deliveries with 12 fours and a maximum.

But then four quick wickets fell with the score at 122/4 after 18.3 overs including both the set openers and England sniffed a chance of winning the game, and getting back in the series.

It was then up to Joy and captain Akbar Ali (57) to steady the ship with a 106-run partnership to take the young Tigers on the brink of victory before Akbar was dismissed with the score at 228/5 in the 44th over.

Joy held fort and made sure he stayed till the end to guide Bangladesh to victory.

His innings of 58 off 92 deliveries included five boundaries.

Hamidullah Qadri was the best bower for the England with 3/48 in his 10 overs.

Tanzid was adjudged player-of-the-match for his quickfire innings.

The third match of the series will be played Saturday in the same venue.
