Tamim vows to make it count next time

Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has vowed to score big in the upcoming matches in the 2019 World Cup, if and when the opportunity arrives.

Tamim has scored 19, 24 and 16 in his last three innings in the World Cup so far against England, New Zealand and South Africa respectively.

In his last three innings, Tamim played 28 deliveries against England, 37 balls against the Kiwis and 28 deliveries against the Proteas before getting dismissed.

That’s quite unusual for him as he got out every time after getting set at the middle.

Tamim generally makes handy scores when he gets set at the middle but on the last three occasions he missed the opportunity to score big.

The left-hander has also admitted that he had done the hard work initially before throwing his wicket away twice in those three innings.

The highest ODI run-scorer of the country is focusing on his game and has vowed to score big in the remainder of the World Cup.

“Normally, I think my type of batting is that I either get out quickly or if I bat through 10 overs, normally I play a big knock. The disappointing thing in my last three innings was I did the hard work in the three matches – overcoming the initial challenge in the first five or six overs. Things should have come in my favor then, but in two of the three matches I threw my wicket away. I hope if I get a start [Monday], I will make it count,” said Tamim after their practice session at Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton Saturday.

The Somerset County Ground, where Bangladesh will face the West Indies Monday, is a relatively small venue and it is expected to be a high-scoring match.

In the 1999 World Cup, Sourav Ganguly scored 183 at this ground against Sri Lanka.

Tamim believes small boundaries will not be a big factor as both the teams need to perform well to win.

“Sometimes big grounds seem small and small grounds seem big. I think this question is arising again and again because normally West Indies players are big-hitters and this ground is smaller than others. But I think there are other ways to get people out. Catching people out is not the only way. In the Australia-Pakistan game (last game in this venue), Australia had big hitters but scored 300,” said Tamim.

“A total of 300 is not much when you consider the ground. It depends on how we plan and if we are able to restrict them. And if we don’t plan well and don’t bowl well, Cardiff was a pretty big ground – both sides – but England scored 380. So it is very important how we execute our plans on the day. The field is the same side for both teams; maybe they have a bit more power,” Tamim added.

The Tigers will face the Windies at 10:30am local time.
