The Tigers skipper Mashrafe bin Mortaza believes the team need to forget whatever happened against the West Indies and focus on Australia

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza said the Tigers need to start from scratch and have to play their best cricket to defeat Australia in their sixth group stage game of the 2019 World Cup at Trent Bridge Thursday.

The Tigers were triumphant in dominant fashion in their last match against the Windies, with 51 balls to spare, after chasing down a challenging target of 322 runs.

Bangladesh bowled well in the death overs against the West Indies to restricting them to 321 amid relatively small boundaries in Taunton.

The Tigers also fielded well as ground fielding was sharp all along and the body language was impressive.

But they have to improve their display today, or at least repeat the performance, to bring another positive result for the team.

Tigers skipper Mashrafe believes the team need to forget whatever happened against the West Indies and focus on Australia.

“Whatever we have played in the West Indies game, that will not going to help that much against Australia. It’s a new game, different opponent and different venue. We have to start from fresh and play well from the first ball. Yes, we can gain some confidence from the last match but we have to play hard, and our best cricket to bring a positive result for us,” Mashrafe said during the pre-match press conference at Trent Bridge Wednesday.

Bangladesh batted extremely well against the Windies and their top-order expertly handled the bouncers bowled by the opposition pacers.

The Tigers counter attacked and played many scoring shots.

But the Bangladesh captain believes the Aussies will pose a different challenge as they have plenty of options in their bowling armory, and can trouble any opposition.

“Australia have a lot of variations in their bowling compared to the West Indies. They have a world-class fast bowling line-up comprising Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins. They can bowl fast, change of pace yorkers. They also have a very good wrist spinner in Adam Zampa and also have the experienced Nathan Lyon in their bowling attack. So definitely it will not be easy for us. We have to bat really well to succeed,” said Mashrafe.

“They also have a strong batting line-up, and their batsmen are in form. Australia are always favorite and very strong contenders in the World Cup. Obviously they are one of the best teams in the tournament. We have no other option other than to play our best cricket,” Mashrafe added.

Bangladesh have four games left in the group stage.

They will face Australia Thursday, Afghanistan in Southampton, India in Birmingham before taking on Pakistan in their last match at Lord’s.

Among those four games, the Tigers need to win at least two matches to stay in contention for one of the four semi-final spots.

The match between Bangladesh and Australia will start from 10:30am local time.
