Bangladesh captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza said their batsmen were courageous while chasing a big target of 382 runs against defending champion Australia at Trent Bridge Thursday.

Chasing 382, Bangladesh managed to score 333 losing eight wickets in their stipulated 50 overs as Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 102, while Mahmudullah scored 69 and Tamim Iqbal made 62.

Mashrafe informed that the Tigers batsmen were positive and courageous during the chase and showed good intent in pursuit of the huge total.

“Our batsmen showed courage during the chase against a strong Australian bowling line-up.  We had managed to restrict the West Indies within 340 and thus our batsmen chased that target confidently with a big partnership at the middle,” Mashrafe said during the post-match press conference Thursday.

“Even against Australia, our plan was same. We knew that if we can restrict them within 340 then our batsmen were confident enough to chase.

“It was a very good wicket. Both sides wanted to bat first. We had created few chances which could have been taken. Fifty-fifty chances need to be taken, we needed a wicket at that time in the first hour of play.”

Mashrafe informed that Australia took full control during the slog overs and that Glenn Maxwell’s 32 off just 10 deliveries damaged their prospects furthermore.

“They were going at six runs per over for a while. Then they took off and accelerated their run rate after 35 overs. We needed [David] Warner’s wicket that time. But the big damage was done after Maxwell came in. I think Maxwell’s innings was a big factor behind such a huge total,” said Mashrafe.

Bangladesh now have three game left in their World Cup campaign.

They will face Afghanistan next in Southampton before taking on India and Pakistan in Birmingham and Lord’s respectively.

To qualify for the semi-final, Bangladesh have to win their remaining three matches and hope other results go their way.

“I think we have three matches left. We have to play hard. It will be difficult for sure. But we will try our best. Even if we win three matches, we have to look and see what’s going on in the other matches as well. From our point of view, it’s important to think about all those three matches one at a time,” Mashrafe concluded.
