Bashar hopeful of Mashrafe fitness before SL series

National selector Habibul Bashar expressed optimism that Bangladesh captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza would be fit for the tour of Sri Lanka, comprising three ODIs, later this month.

Mashrafe suffered an injury during the final of the Ireland tri-nation ODI series against the West Indies prior to the World Cup 2019.

The Tigers skipper then had a disappointing World Cup in England and Wales where he picked up only one wicket in eight matches, and bowled with a shorter run-up in the latter stage of the competition.

But following a nearly one and a half hour meeting at the BCB headquarter in Mirpur Friday where Mashrafe, chief selector Minhajul Abedin and team manager Khaled Mahmud were present, Bashar said, “I think, he is fit. Mashrafe’s fitness is upon himself. I think, he will need to give a fitness test. There are few concerns about him because he played the World Cup with injury. He has got some time to recover from that. I am hoping that he will be fit before the Sri Lanka series.

“We haven’t got any indication like he won’t play.”

There are also doubts hovering over the participation of wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan for the Sri Lanka ODIs.

“We have discussed about this matter, if we don’t get them (Shakib and Liton), who will be their replacement. Liton has asked for leave because he is getting married and maybe Shakib asked for a leave earlier but that is not also confirmed yet. We are told to keep two options open and we have thought about that too. We haven’t got the final report yet,” explained the former Bangladesh captain.

Bashar went on to emphasize on the importance of finding a suitable replacement for outgoing head coach Steve Rhodes, who was ousted from his role following the World Cup.

The former right-handed batsman added, “We want a good coach. Who is experienced for sure. Because we have some bilateral series next, we also have World T20I ahead. Bangladesh got many coaches over the years, and all were good coaches. I am sure the coach whom BCB will appoint, they will think over that and will take the right decision. Nonetheless, I think the coach who will come will adapt with us. Because we have World Cup in four years and we have to start taking preparation from now on. In between we will play some bilateral series too. So, I think BCB will bring someone with whom we will plan for the next four years.”
