Finch: We were just outplayed

Australia captain Aaron Finch is of the opinion that they lost the World Cup 2019 semi-final against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham in the first 10 overs of their innings after the Aussies won the toss and elected to bat first.

The Aussies lost three wickets in the first 10 overs as openers Finch and David Warner and No 4 batsman Peter Handscomb made their way to the pavilion for single digit scores.

Australia never really recovered from there as they eventually posted a below par 223 all out in 49 overs.

England, in reply, romped home in 32.1 overs with eight wickets in hand.

“Definitely in the first 10 overs of the game. We know they were going to come really aggressive at us with the bat, so we had to be aggressive with the ball, we had to take or create 10 chances and take them as well, so it wasn't going to be a game, especially against England, a game that peters out into the 47th, 48th over. It was going to be ultra-aggressive and they got on top of us early with the bat,” said Finch in the post match press conference Thursday.

“But the damage was really done with the ball. That sets you back. That forced us to rebuild for such a long time and start to drag some momentum back and then, like I said, you lose a couple of quick wickets again, new batters starting, it is always tough against really good leg-spin and good quicks as well.

“So, all in all, we were totally outplayed to be honest all throughout the day, so you look back at that and you can analyze each 10 overs, but just outplayed,” he added.
