Taijul confident about SL ODIs

Bangladesh's Taijul Islam takes a catch during training in Colombo Sunday

Taijul Islam, who has played just four ODIs for the Tigers since his debut in the format back in 2014, has put aside the tag of being a replacement for world ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam is back in the ODI fold for the first time since 2016.

And the opportunity has come with all-rounder Shakib al Hasan missing out from the three-match ODI series against host Sri Lanka, set to start Friday in Colombo.

As like always, the Bangladesh national selectors are put in a dilemma over selection whenever Shakib is missing from the squad – they simply have to bring in a batsman and bowler separately.

This time with Shakib granted leave having played cricket at a stretch since the start of the year, the BCB selectors are said to have got in Anamul Haque and Taijul and set enough pressure of expectation on the duo.

Two others to make the cut through to the squad are Taskin Ahmed and Farhad Reza for injured Mashrafe bin Mortaza and Saifuddin respectively.

Taijul, who has played just four ODIs for the Tigers since his debut in the format back in 2014, has put aside the tag of being a replacement for world ace all-rounder Shakib.

“I can never be seen as a replacement for Shakib bhai. He is an all-rounder and one of the top all-rounders in world cricket,” said Taijul to the media in the sidelines of Bangladesh’s first practice session at R Premadasa Stadium Sunday.

“If given the opportunity in the playing XI, I have clear intention of delivering the best for the team on the day and of course try to cover the absence that the team has (for not having Shakib bhai),” the left-arm spinner added.

Bangladesh despite not being at main strength are optimistic of a positive outcome from the series.

Then there is also the expectation for the side to pick themselves up from the low that it has hit in the just concluded World Cup 2019.

“We as a team are morally strong and looking forward to the series. We cannot be seen lightly compared to the strength to that of Sri Lanka. A good team on the day will have the result going for them. Hope the bunch we have here will get to their best and bag some positive results,” said Taijul.

“The team seem to be very active now and players are helping each other out in order to prepare for the series. We are looking forward to a good series ahead,” the Bangladesh bowler added.
