Reigning champion Abahani Limited were held to a 2-2 draw against Chittagong Abahani Limited thanks to an injury-time equalizer by Nigerian striker Nkwocha Kingsley in one of the three matches played in the Bangladesh Premier League Wednesday.

The lone match at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka saw Abahani all but out of the race to retain the title with the draw where they went ahead twice in the game, but couldn’t hold on on both occasions.

The traditional Sky Blues could have opened the scoring in the first half but was denied by the brilliant performance of Chittagong Abahani goalkeeper Mohammad Nehal as the opening half ended goalless.

Nehal made two consecutive saves in the 45th minute, first he jumped high to fist away Mamun Mia’s left-footed shot before punching away Mamunul Islam’s long-range effort from the right side.

Nehal made another outstanding save to deny Nabib Newaj Jibon’s diving header from the middle of the box.

Mamun finally gave Abahani the lead in the 64th minute when his shot from inside the box was deflected off  Kyrgyz defender Daniel Armah Tagoe before entering into the net.

Tagoe equalized in the 75th minute from a penalty sending the Abahani custodian Shahidul Alam Sohel the wrong way from the spot after Mamun fouled Nigerian forward Kingsley inside the box.

Chittagong Abahani almost went close to scoring again three minutes later when Kaushik Barua ran past a couple of defenders only to see his right-footer denied by the woodwork.

Jibon put the Sky Blues ahead once again in the 80th minute after placing home following a long throw-in by Rayhan Hasan.

Kingsley restored parity for Chittagong Abahani in injury time when the Nigerian stroked past Sohel after a long ball by Naimur Rahman Shahed fell in front of him inside the box.

Abahani remained second with 55 points from 23 matches while Chittagong Abahani are seventh with 24 points from 22 games.
