Chief national selector Minhajul Abedin briefs the media in Mirpur Dhaka Tribune

Former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin explaining the task ahead said it will be challenging, given that the Tigers have to develop in the format as significantly as they did in ODIs

Bangladesh national cricket chief selector Minhajul Abedin while revealing the selection panel’s plan ahead informed that they will now eye the 2020 World T20I.

The BCB in a meeting Saturday extended Minhajul and member of the selection panel Habibul Bashar’s contracts until the World T20I.

Former Bangladesh captain Minhajul explaining the task ahead said it will be challenging, given that the Tigers have to develop in the format as significantly as they did in ODIs.

“Next we have got the World T20I and it’s the format in which we are not still good enough. We have started devising the plan for this. Some new coaches have been added in the management and we’ll sit with them to decide the next course of action. We have to keenly follow the domestic league to find out players for this format. The experience that we have as selectors, I believe we can overcome this challenge,” said Minhajul to reporters Sunday.

Minhajul, who is also a Level 3 coach, emphasized on the importance of the cricketers playing T20 cricket in the months heading to the world event and also the necessity to have players in pipeline who are good in the shorter format of the game.

“As a Level 3 coach I know the technical side well. So I think I can find out the right ones for this format. The challenge we got for the next one year is to build up a team for T20s. If we get support from all stakeholders, I think we can bring up a good result. It’s a teamwork indeed,” said Minhajul.

“We do not have any tournament other than the BPL in this format. So it’s tough to find out players. We have to work hard. There is plan to organize some T20 tournament exclusively for the local players. I think we’ll get some good feedback once these tournaments begin,” he added.

With 60 some players playing in the highest of professional level currently, Minhajul believes the opportunity is good to find out raw talents and polish them for the Bangladesh national pipeline.

“At the moment, 60 players have been in continuous cricket in various platforms. This is particularly a good sign that we can never engage so many players in cricket at the same time. We have been getting good feedback,” he concluded.
