A BPL GC press conference held at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday announced that the T20 competition will start a “fresh cycle” based on the renewal of contracts between the BCB and the franchises

Bangladesh Premier League T20 franchise Rangpur Riders have been left upset as the BPL governing council decided to start a fresh cycle.

A BPL GC press conference held at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday announced that the T20 competition will start a “fresh cycle” based on the renewal of contracts between the BCB and the franchises.

This will mean that the players’ retention policies, draft and other regulations might all come as new following renewal of the contracts with the franchises.

The decision has come as a surprise to a few of the franchises who had started preparing for the seventh edition of the BPL, scheduled to start in the first week of December this year.

Franchises like Rangpur Riders, Khulna Titans, Rajshahi Kings and Comilla Victorians were known to have signed foreign cricketers based on the “two direct overseas signings” allocation.

Rangpur last week announced the signing of all-rounder Shakib al Hasan as their “icon” for the upcoming season of the tournament.

Shakib for the last three BPL editions had played for Dhaka Dynamites and it is well established in the cricket fraternity that the Dynamites were not happy with Shakib making a move.

Shakib changed ship from Dynamites to Riders based on the BPL GC’s regulation of the “icon or A+ category players”.

It was well in motion that the A+ category players had the freedom to move to their desired franchises, and this was evident with the A+ category players moving from one team to another over the past three seasons of the tournament.

In 2016, based on “icons are free to move” regulation, Shakib had signed with Dynamites, Mashrafe bin Mortaza with Victorians, Tamim Iqbal with Chittagong Vikings, Mahmudullah with the Titans, Mushfiqur Rahim with Barisal Bulls, Soumya Sarkar had come as the new icon for the Riders while Sabbir Rahman had joined the Kings.

In 2017, Mashrafe had moved to Rangpur while Tamim joined Comilla, Mushfiq from Barisal to Rajshahi while Sabbir went to Sylhet Sixers from Rajshahi.

In 2019, it was only Mushfiq who had found a new franchise in Chittagong after moving out from Rajshahi.

“We cannot play in this manner. It’s not important whether we will continue with BPL or not but it’s just not worthy that we spend Tk10 to 15 crores every year and they [BPL GC] will come up with different ideas every year,” said Rangpur CEO Ishtiak Sadeque to the media Sunday.

BPL GC in the press conference decided to go for renewal upon mutual understanding with the existing franchises.

If any of the existing franchises decide to discontinue in the tournament, the BPL GC will seek new Expression of Interest for the interested teams.

“If necessary, we will not play because the BCB has a lot of teams, let them play with them,’’ Ishtiak added with an annoying tone.

Earlier, BCB vice president and BPL T20 commissioner Mahbub Anam on behalf of the BPL GC alongside announcing the decisions from the committee has also said the BPL GC doesn’t acknowledge Rangpur agreeing terms with Shakib.

“There is no existing contract between the BCB and the franchises. So whatever they [Shakib and Rangpur] have done has no relationship to the BCB or the BPL GC. The BCB does not need to acknowledge nor discuss this matter,” said Mahbub.

“If there is no agreement and the policies are not outlined, your actions cannot be validated,” the BCB director added.

Meanwhile, Titans’ managing director Kazi Inam Ahmed citing frustration over yet another set of rules scheduled to come into effect in the BPL said, “I think we need to have specific rules for BPL and it should run for four years. At least, in that case, we can plan better."

It is widely known that Khulna had reached mutual understanding with opener Tamim while Comilla had agreed terms with Mushfiq for the next BPL.
