Bangladesh are the defending champion of the tournament

Bangladesh women’s cricket team are set to leave Dhaka for the Netherlands Thursday morning for the four-match T20I series, part of their preparation for the World T20I qualifiers.

The women will then travel to Scotland for the qualifiers, scheduled to be played from August 21 to September 7.

The team’s head coach Anju Jain ahead of their departure from the capital emphasized on winning matches to make their existence felt by the opponent teams, and go with momentum into the upcoming WT20I qualifiers.

Till date, Bangladesh women’s cricket team have participated in three WT20I competitions in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

On all occasions however, the team produced below-par results and the worst came in the last edition of the tournament.

In 2018, Bangladesh had gone into the tournament with high hope having won the Asia Cup title only to return home from the group stage.

“It’s disappointing the way we’ve played in the 2018 World Cup for sure, but I think that had worked into the girls’ mind also. Now they really want to work harder than ever and that’s what we are doing this season,” said Anju to the media Wednesday.

“For us, being good is not enough as last season the target for us was to make our presence felt everywhere and people have noticed our performances. But until we start winning more matches, it’s not going to solve the purpose for us. This year the target is to win more number of games from the qualifying round. Our first target is to qualify then we’ll start again and go series by series,” the former India cricketer added.

Anju said they are now stressing on need-based training and added that they have spotted a few talents during the Emerging Cup in South Africa recently.

“It’s not about lacking. Actually, at that time our batting didn’t click that well. As far as our bowling and fielding are concerned, we did well in the World Cup. But we have been working on that. We had three and a half weeks for skills and fitness campaign in Rajshahi. We had identified some batting areas and started working on it. Fortunately, we got South Africa emerging tour which helped us to find some new players. Now we are getting more balanced side and we don’t have to depend on one or two players,” said the 45-year old Anju.

“Last year we started working with the fitness level and this year it remains the same. To compete in international event, players’ fitness level needs to improve. If you see, the girls have become much fitter. But fielding is one area that we are still working on. It might make the difference between us and the other sides. Batting and bowling wise everybody is looking in pretty good shape but we’ll keep working hard on our fielding,” she concluded.

Bangladesh will begin their campaign in the eight-team qualifying tournament taking on Papua New Guinea on the opening day.

Bangladesh are the defending champion of the tournament.
