Bangladesh all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz is confident that his side will be ahead of Afghanistan due to their experience in the longer format, added by the factor of home advantage.

The Tigers will return to action with the lone Test match against visitor Afghanistan in Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, starting September 5.

The game is the first ever Test between the two sides.

In the recent months, Bangladesh passed a dreadful time, finishing eighth in the 10-nation World Cup 2019 in England and Wales, followed by the 3-0 ODI series whitewash against host Sri Lanka.

Following a 19-day long break, the cricketers reported at the national camp in Dhaka under the supervision of newly appointed head coach Russell Domingo.

Following the Afghanistan Test, Bangladesh will host a tri-nation T20I series involving Zimbabwe and the Afghans.

“Every match is challenging, I can’t say particularly if it’s a big or small challenge. Because the better team in the field will win the match,” said Miraz to reporters at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday.

“In terms of experience and the last Test matches which we played, we are ahead of them. And also, we will have the home advantage. So we are ahead of them in many aspects,” he added.

The wicket in the port city is being said to be a “green” one, hinting that Bangladesh will be looking to reduce the effectiveness of the world-class Afghanistan spin attack.

Till date, the Tigers have faced the Afghans only in shorter formats of the game, and was found struggling against the opposition spinners, namely Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

“Both Mirpur and Chittagong are our home grounds. We are in home conditions, so we know what will happen and what not. They have played T20Is and one-day cricket in our conditions but not Tests. We know our conditions and we’ll try to take that advantage. Because we have enough chances, we will get used to the conditions too. Maybe our batsmen will have more chances (in Chittagong) to make runs,” Miraz explained.

The 21-year old seeks inspiration from the senior members of his team as he believes it will help him to play better cricket if the junior players follow in the seniors’ footsteps.

“I like the fact that our senior cricketers work really hard, I have seen closely. I have seen Shakib [al Hasan] bhai during the World Cup and he worked really hard for two months during the IPL. Mushfiq bhai (Mushfiqur Rahim) always works really hard. Riyad bhai (Mahmudullah) too. And then Tamim [Iqbal] bhai, may be he could not perform as we expected but he works really hard too,” Miraz said.

“As a junior player, we have a lot to learn from them. The junior members in our team, me, Saifuddin, Mosaddek Hossain, Soumya Sarkar; we all have a lot to learn from the seniors. Because the amount of hard work they do, if we can do the same, I think our team will play better cricket,” he added.
