Bangladesh, replying to Afghanistan’s 342 runs in the first innings, have their backs against the wall, limping to just 194 for the loss of eight wickets in 67 overs after a horrific batting debacle

Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan has urged his side to respond to the dire situation they are currently facing against Afghanistan in the one-off Test match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Following day two, the host are cornered with a possible defeat looming on the horizon.

Bangladesh, replying to Afghanistan’s 342 runs in the first innings, have their backs against the wall, limping to just 194 for the loss of eight wickets in 67 overs after a horrific batting debacle.

The Tigers’ struggles in the game though started from the beginning when they were asked to bowl first with an all-spin attack, only to find a flat surface.

It is well established that Bangladesh had all the intention of a “fabricated wicket” at ZACS to help their spin strategy.

However, as it has happened so far, it is only the opposition bowlers who are being able to get some turn with the advantage of wrist spin.

Afghanistan have fielded three wrist spinners in Rashid Khan, Qais Ahmed and Zahir Khan.

Following stumps on day two, Shakib said the Bangladesh dressing room is surprised to find a track that is probably the flattest they have encountered at home.

“We were actually surprised. We had not expected this kind of wicket. It is totally opposite to what we expected,” said Shakib to the media in the port city Friday.

“But this doesn’t mean that we should not be able to produce a good performance here. There will be times when you will face such situations, you might not have it the way you have planned or expected. The big teams make the difference here, to adapt to situations and answer if there are questions out of the box. It will be better for us that way,” the all-rounder added.

Bangladesh are 148 runs behind Afghanistan and the situation suggests chances are very slim for the home side to bounce back in the game.

Seven of the eight Bangladesh wickets were taken by the Afghan spinners with captain Rashid leading from the front.

Having added a quick 51 to the Afghanistan tally, Rashid went on to pick four wickets and got good support from Mohammad Nabi and Qais, who bagged two and one wicket respectively.

Bangladesh’s highest score came from Mominul Haque, who made 52 before giving away his wicket to an ambitious shot.

Eyebrows were also raised over the manner in which Shadman Islam (nought), Liton Das (33) and Mahmudullah (seven) gifted their wickets to the opposition.

“Mominul had batted that way throughout his innings. But he could have executed that ball [in which he lost his wicket] in a better way. It could have been a four if not a six, that way it could have been better. The ball had kept low in both the days so Liton could have planned it better. He could have done that if he had not played that many crossed bat shots, he should have stayed as he was playing well,” said Shakib.

“We were in need of a partnership, that way we could have lost four or five wickets and not eight,” Shakib added.
