Ruman wins gold in Asia Cup Archery

In the final, Mohammad Ruman Shana defeated Chinese archer Jhen Ki Shi by 7-3 set points

Bangladeshi archer Mohammad Ruman Shana brought laurels for the country Friday as he won gold medal in the men's recurve singles in the Asia Cup World Ranking Archery Tournament Stage 3 in Clerk City, Philippines.

In the final, Ruman defeated Chinese archer Jhen Ki Shi by 7-3 set points.

The 24-year old Ruman drew the opening set 28-each before going down 29-26 in the second.

The top Bangladeshi archer, who finished second in the qualifiers of this tournament with a score of 671, then won the third set 27-25. 

He bagged the fourth set 28-25 before sealing the final set 28-27 after a grueling battle.

Bangladesh head coach Martin Frederick expressed delight after Ruman continued his recent run of good form, winning bronze in the World Archery Championship in the Netherlands last June.

Following his third place finish in the World Archery, Ruman qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Frederick said, "I’m very happy and proud of Ruman’s success and his performance during the competition week. It’s so pleasant to see that the hard work come to be worthwhile. Also I’m more than satisfied with our whole team presentation here - additional to Ruman’s gold, we achieved with the men team the silver medal and in the mixed team bronze, all our players on the podium."

Ruman was an elated man after the gold triumph and said this would stand him in good stead for the Tokyo Olympics.

“I’m really happy, I was in quite a good rhythm. This kind of tournament gives me confidence and will help me for the Olympics next year,” said Ruman.

“For me, and for Bangladesh, this is a matter of happiness. We are trying to represent Bangladesh in the best way in the world stage. I hope I’ll be able to maintain this consistency.” 

Bangladesh went on to earn silver in the men's recurve team event after Ruman, Tamimul Islam and Hakim Ahmed Rubel lost to China 5-3. 

Ruman also succeeded in the mixed doubles event, teaming up with Beauty Roy and beating Chinese Taipei 5-1 in the third place match.
