Bangladesh football team head coach Jamie Day rued not getting all three points after their 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup joint qualifiers match against India ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata Tuesday evening.

India’s last-gasp equalizer by Adil Khan broke Bangladesh hearts after versatile winger Saad Uddin put the men in red and green ahead minutes before the first half whistle.

“I thought we defended really well. We had the best chances in the game. I think we’ve shown how far we’ve come in such a short space of time,” said the 40-year old English coach after the game.

“Up until the last 10 minutes, the plan was to frustrate India. We counter-attacked really well. Like I said, we had the best chances. I am just gutted that we couldn’t get all three points which the boys truly deserve,” he added.

Bangladesh, who have now earned their first point in three matches, will play away against Oman in their fourth Group E match on November 14.

India head coach Igor Stimac meanwhile, acknowledged Bangladesh’s display but lashed out at his often-pedestrian defence for conceding the headed opener.

“The strategy was quick passing at the back. Opening the gaps in the channels. We have quality players up there but we were slow at the back. In the opening 45 minutes there wasn’t enough speed and we were keeping the ball at our feet for too long so the gaps were not opening,” said the Croatian coach, who was an important squad member of the national team that finished third in the 1998 World Cup.

“We gave away a simple goal. Congratulations to Bangladesh but we gave away a silly goal. You cannot win games if you give away silly goals like the one [Tuesday],” the 52-year old added.
