Taibur, Shuvagata guide Dhaka, Razzak bags 10

Dhaka’s middle-order batsmen Taibur Rahman and Shuvagata Hom were both on the verge of centuries, as the capital city outfit edged ahead of Rajshahi on day two of their fourth round match in the National Cricket League in Cox’s Bazar Sunday.

In reply to Rajshahi’s first-innings tally of 230 in the tier one match, Dhaka posted 284 for the loss of four wickets in 91 overs - a lead of 54 runs.

Dhaka were initially in a spot of bother, with the team at 104/4 when Shuvagata joined Taibur at the crease. An unbroken fifth-wicket stand between the two added 180 to the scoreboard, with Taibur on 93 and Shuvagata on 92 at the close of the day’s play.

Left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam was the pick of Rajshahi’s bowlers, bagging three wickets.

Rangpur v Khulna

The other tier one game in Mirpur is balanced on knife edge, with Rangpur registering 67/4 after 26 overs in their second innings against Khulna. The batting side leads by 58 runs.

Khulna’s left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who wrote his name in the history books of Bangladesh cricket by becoming the first bowler in the country to reach the 600 first-class wicket club Saturday, got in on the act once again Sunday.

Razzak took three wickets to go with his seven in the first innings, bagging his 11th 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket.

Khulna were earlier dismissed for 233 in 71 overs in their first innings, achieving a respectable score largely thanks to a valiant 119 from lower-order batsman Mahedi Hasan.

Khulna were reeling at 80/8 when Mahedi took matters in his own hands and played a beautiful 150-ball knock, featuring 15 fours and a six.

Dhaka Metro v Chittagong

Chittagong were in all sorts of trouble against Dhaka Metropolis at stumps on day two, with the port city outfit scoring 96/3 after 34 overs in their second innings.

Chittagong were made to follow on after a horrible batting display in their first innings, with the team bundled out for 91 after just 30.5 overs despite playing at home. Chittagong’s batting line-up collapsed in the face of some devastating bowling from off-spinner Sharifullah and national team discard Taskin Ahmed, who bagged four and three wickets, respectively.  

The port city side now trail Dhaka Metro by 216 runs.

Dhaka Metro earlier put up a commanding 403 in 108.4 overs, inspired by opener Shadman Islam’s imposing 178 off 276 deliveries. The knock included 23 boundaries and a couple of over boundaries.

Shadman was supported well by Al Amin (83) and No 3 batsman Shamsur Rahman (50).

Sylhet v Barisal

Sylhet are in the driving seat following day two of their tier two match against Barisal, as the latter trail by 148 runs in their second innings.

Barisal was at 12/1 after six overs at stumps, and find themselves behind the eight ball in the coastal city.

Sylhet earlier managed a handy first-innings lead of 160, after putting 322 up on the board. The strong batting performance was led by half-centuries from opening batsman Shanaj Ahmed (73) and wicketkeeper-batsman Zakir Hasan (53).
