Bangladesh head coach Jamie Day said the gulf in class was clear for all to see as the Bengal Tigers conceded a 4-1 loss against Oman in their joint World Cup and Asian Cup Qualifier in Muscat Thursday night.

The men in red and green now languish at the bottom of Group E with one point from four matches and Day said the Oman loss was their toughest game so far in the qualifying campaign.

“As I said, a very good side (Oman). Maybe our toughest game. I think we played better in the wings in the second half, but when you give good teams chances then they will take those chances. I think we worked hard and I’m proud of the boys. We’ll learn from it and we’ll move on to the next qualifying game,” Day told the media after the game.

“Oman are a far better team than we are, far better players. I think they showed that quality. I am disappointed that we lost by four; I don’t think we deserved to lose by four. At least we scored. There’s lots to take from here; some positives,” said the English coach, referring to Biplo Ahmed’s consolation goal in the latter stages of the game.

“I think in the second half it was about keeping the shape. Probably we got a little sloppy in the defensive play in the second half. But again, they are (ranked) 84 and we are 183rd, and the big difference in class showed.”

He added, “If we were to come away with a draw that would’ve been an outstanding result. We didn’t start the second half very well. If we could’ve got 10 or 15 minutes in the second half to frustrate them a bit more, then it might have been harder for them to open the game. But because we conceded early, we had to chase it a little bit.

“But you can’t take anything away from the players. They’re doing their best. They are playing above their maximum in every game. And we can’t expect our players to keep playing at 9s and 10 every week. It’s impossible. So I’m proud of how they’ve done.”

Bangladesh will next play Afghanistan on March 26, 2020 at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

After such a chastening defeat, it is normal for the booters to feel down but Day said they don’t need extra motivation for the Afghanistan clash.

“They don’t need motivating. They’re disappointed, which is a good thing. They’re all disappointed we lost. That shows how far we’ve come. It’s not a negative. We got positives from the game: for a good period of the game, we were playing well against an exceptionally good team. We can always look at negatives and say this and that, but let’s look at the positives,” said the 40-year old.

“If you are losing, you have to chase the match in order to get back into the game. So if you are chasing the game, and when you play against teams like that, they find the space. We could’ve sat back and lost 2-0, but we wanted to score. There are a lot of Bangladesh fans here. We wanted to give them a game for 90 minutes.

“We were in really good shape for 47-48 minutes. Oman are far superior. None of our players could get into the Oman team. Not disappointed.”
