Bangladesh have been forced into two concussion substitutions on the first day of the pink-ball Test match against host India, as the visiting side were bowled out for a paltry 106 in their first innings.

Liton Das (24) and Nayeem Islam (19), two of only three batsmen who reached double figure for the Tigers, were both clattered in the head by bouncers from Indian pacer Mohammed Shami either side of the lunch break.

Shortly after Nayeem had joined Liton at the crease, the latter was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Mohammad Shami on the third delivery of the 21st over.

After being examined by the physio, Liton faced six more deliveries before retiring hurt on the fourth ball of the 22nd over, as the umpires called for the supper break.

Following the break, wicketkeeper-batsman Liton was replaced by concussion substitute Mehedi Hasan Miraz at the crease.

As per International Cricket Council rules, concussion substitutes are like-for-like; all-rounder Miraz was allowed to bat in Liton’s stead, but will not be allowed to bowl.

Miraz failed to make the most of his stay at crease, scoring just eight off 13 deliveries before getting caught out off the bowling of pacer Ishant Sharma in the last ball of the 28th over.

Meanwhile, Nayeem became the second victim of Shami’s bouncers almost immediately after the supper break, getting clattered in the side of the helmet in the first ball of the 23rd over.

Nayeem continued to bat after being examined by the physios of both teams, but never looked comfortable as the Indian pacers continued to use the short ball.

Nayeem was eventually dismissed by Ishant in the last ball of the 30th over, after scoring 19 off 28 deliveries.

Just three balls later, Bangladesh lost their last wicket of the innings for the low total of 106.

When Bangladesh took to the field after the innings break, Nayeem was replaced in the field by concussion substitute Taijul Islam.

As Nayeem was in the line-up as an off-spinner, Taijul will be allowed to bowl.

Mohammad Mithun took up wicket-keeping duties for Liton.

According to team management sources, both Liton and Nayeem have undergone scans at a hospital.

This is the first time in Test history that two concussion substitutes had to be introduced in the same match, and the fifth instance overall.

Australian Marnus Labuschagne became the first player to be subbed in under the new set of concussion substitution guidelines, when he replaced Steve Smith in the second Ashes Test this year.

Subsequently, West Indian batsman Jermaine Blackwood was substituted for Darren Bravo against India in September this year.

The third instance was on October 21, when South African batsman Dean Elgar was replaced by Theunis de Bruyn following a blow to the head against India.
