Windies opener Chris Gayle took the media in Bangladesh by storm after revealing that he would not take part in the upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League in December this year, and also said he does not know how his name was included in the tournament’s players’ draft held on November 17

Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed that West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle’s name in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 draft was included following “complete procedure.”

Windies opener Gayle took the media in Bangladesh by storm after revealing that he would not take part in the upcoming edition of the BPL in December this year, and also said he does not know how his name was included in the tournament’s players’ draft held on November 17.

“We maintain a certain procedure over inclusion of overseas cricketers in the BPL draft list. A name is only included in the draft after the cricketer or the cricketer’s agent shows interest. They have to fill a document to complete registration. We have checked and found the procedure complete [for Gayle],” said Nizamuddin to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Wednesday.

“We are not aware how and under what situation this [Gayle not aware of playing in BPL] has come up. But we are checking with the agent of the respective player and also with the team [that had taken the cricketer],” the BCB high-up added.

During a press conference in the ongoing South African T20 league Mzansi Super League Sunday, Gayle had informed that he would take a breather from competitive action in the coming months, and would thus be unavailable for BPL 2019-20, set to begin on December 11.

Meanwhile, Chattogram Challengers, the BPL side that had roped in Gayle from the draft, expressed fury over this development.

It is understood that the team have asked for an explanation from the board, the BPL governing council and Gayle’s agent as to how the name was registered for the draft if the player did not have the consent.

It is understood that Chattogram are in negotiations with Gayle in an effort to ensure his availability for the tournament this season.
