Bangladesh Olympic team kept their hope alive for the final of the 13th South Asian Games football after beating Sri Lanka 1-0 to clinch their first win at Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu Thursday.

Mahbubur Rahman Sufil, who started on the bench in the first two matches against Bhutan and Maldives, replaced Nabib Newaj Jibon in the starting XI and took only 11 minutes to net the all-important goal.

Sufil was one of the four changes Jamie Day made from the previous match, along with defenders Bishwanath Ghosh and Yeasin Khan and forward Mohammad Al-Amin, who replaced Rahmat Mia, Biplo Ahmed and Mohammad Ibrahim.

The players of both the teams looked tired on the pitch after playing three matches in only four days.

Day was however, content with the performance of the booters.

He said, “Very pleased with the performance. We could have won with bigger margin as they missed some scoring chances at the end of the match. But I can’t blame the players because they have been playing continuously throughout the year.”

Sufil broke the deadlock early in the game, tapping home from inside the box after receiving a pass from Saad Uddin, who was set up earlier by a through pass from midfielder and skipper Jamal Bhuiyan.

Saad and Sufil were again involved in another attack in the 34th minute when the former’s attempt on target following Sufil’s pass was saved by the Sri Lankan goalkeeper.

Rahmat Mia, who replaced Al Amin in the 70th minute before Jibon came in for Sufil, went close to scoring but the Sri Lankan keeper tipped away the effort over the crossbar.

Jibon had another chance to salvage the three points but the striker slowed his pace down inside the box after a fine run and wasted the opportunity without testing the keeper.

Ibrahim, who replaced Rabiul Hasan, squandered a chance in the 83rd minute.

Bangladesh now have four points with a game in hand in the five-team round robin league.

They will face host Nepal Sunday.

Bangladesh must need maximum points against reigning champion Nepal in their bid to reach the gold-medal final, slated for Tuesday.

The men in red and green conceded a 1-0 defeat against Bhutan in the first game Monday before being held to a 1-1 draw against Maldives the next day.

Bangladesh also began their 1999 SAG campaign with a defeat against Maldives before strolling to their first gold in the Games.
