Habibul Bashar said Mustafizur Rahman has become too predictable for opponent batsmen in recent times

Member of the national selection panel Habibul Bashar has expressed concern with the form of left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman.

Bashar said Mustafizur has become too predictable for opponent batsmen in recent times.

A day ago, the Fizz made a sharp start for Rangpur Rangers in their opening Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 match, giving away only 12 runs in his first three overs.

The 24-year old however, had a last over to forget, leaking four boundaries against Cumilla Warriors captain Dasun Shanaka.

Mustafizur’s contributions for the national team have also been minimal of late.

In the three-match T20I series away to India, Mustafizur failed to even make it to the top 10 list of the highest wicket-takers, or for that matter the best economy rates.

The Satkhira lad bowled 9.5 overs in three overs and remained wicketless with an economy rate of 9.51.

In his last 10 T20Is, the Fizz picked up only nine wickets in 33.4 overs, conceding 315 runs at an economy rate of 9.35.

“It is a concern because we are missing the real Mustafizur for the past one year. There is no yorker in Mustafizur’s bowling, he had wonderful yorkers before. Slower deliveries are still there while his pace is also increasing. Now he is bowling in good pace. (But) yorker is missing. He is becoming predictable. This is my concern. Batsmen are able to predict what is he is going to do,” said Bashar to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur Thursday.

Former Bangladesh captain Bashar said the time is high for Mustafizur to reflect on his recent performance, and strategize a strong comeback.

“I think he [Mustafizur] should think. The batsmen and the bowlers think after the match about what is happening. It is high time that he should think about the batsmen predicting, or should he go into the second plan,” said Bashar.

“Maybe the coach will instruct him, but the player should also need to understand how he needs to bowl. [Wednesday], he bowled wonderfully in the first two overs. In the last two overs, he was much predictable. He bowled the same length and got beaten. This had to happen. Shanaka is an excellent batsman in T20. Mustafizur was not trying to do something different,” added the former right-handed batsman.
