Nazmul: Mahmudullah looked to bat last

BCB president Nazmul Hassan speaks to journalists Dhaka Tribune

The BCB boss took a swipe at team captain Mahmudullah as he thinks the skipper was not eager to take responsibility by batting up the order

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan said he is bemused with the Tigers’ performance in Pakistan, and that some of their tactics left him dumbfounded.

Bangladesh toured the country for the first time in more than a decade and was confident ahead of the series, given that the cricketers had just finished a 35-day long Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 campaign.

However, as it happened, Bangladesh were found clueless with the bat in the two matches that took place, conceding twin defeats, while the third game got abandoned due to rain.

The BCB boss took a swipe at team captain Mahmudullah as he thinks the skipper was not eager to take responsibility by batting up the order.

“When Tamim [Iqbal] was not available [for two series] we had Liton Das and [Mohammad] Naim open for us. Then we have Soumya [Sarkar] who is also an opener. In the second game, Soumya should have come out to bat at No 3 but instead we had Mahedi [Hasan] coming in at three. I do not think it is logical. Liton could have come at No 3 and Riyad could have batted at four as Mushfiqur [Rahim] was not there,” said the BCB supremo to the media at his corporate office in Dhaka Wednesday.

“Riyad (Mahmudullah) always wanted to bat up the order but this time it looked like he wanted to come at last to bat. I cannot say everything in public but it is clear that we cannot win scoring 130-140 runs. I need to sit with them [team],” he added.

Nazmul also said he would ask the team the reasons for their below-par performances that saw the games end in one-sided affairs.

“We need to sit [for a meeting] with the players, coach and team management and understand. I met Riyad and Tamim and asked them the reason for such poor batting. Why did we decide to bat first having come to play in Pakistan after a long time? We chase well. But they said the wicket was good for batting but it did not reflect the way they played,” said Nazmul.

“Doesn’t matter how expensive the coach is, you do not need to make Tamim, Shakib [al Hasan], Mushfiq, Riyad playing their playing role. It is sad if you need to teach Soumya and Liton their role. I do not think you need to make the best of the players teach their role in the team,” said Nazmul.

BCB boss emphasized the need of players informing of their unavailability with sufficient time in hand.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiq was the latest to pull out from the series at the last minute as he opted not to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns while Shakib and Tamim missed previous series owing to different reasons.

As a result, Nazmul claimed, the team come up short in terms of forming a proper combination.

If the cricketers had informed well ahead of the series, the team management would have gotten more time to find their replacement, said the BCB chief.

With the T20I series, Bangladesh have completed their first part of the three-phase tour of Pakistan.

The cricketers are now in Dhaka and will prepare for the Test series that will be part of the second and penultimate phase.

Bangladesh Test team are scheduled to leave for Pakistan Tuesday and Nazmul said he does not see any reason why the Tigers would not travel.

“We were confused of the security arrangement until we saw it physically. We had decided to plan the rest of the series after the T20Is. It is not possible for better security arrangements than what they have already given. We are pleased. But then again anything can happen at any time,” said Nazmul.

“There is no reason for us to not to travel to play Tests because this is part of the Test championship. There is no point in giving them walkover. I think we are going to play the Test,” he concluded.
