Tour will be postponed if BCB don’t agree to health guidelines, says SLC CEO

The Tigers are scheduled to leave Dhaka for Sri Lanka Sunday for the three-Test series

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva said Thursday that Bangladesh need to follow the strict health guidelines provided by the Sri Lanka Covid-19 Task Force, otherwise the proposed three-match Test series could be postponed.

“Whatever the feedback we receive from the Covid-19 Task Force, we will share it to the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Once we get the response from them (BCB), and if they are not prepared to follow that guideline that will be given by the Task Force, then we might call off the tour and reschedule the tour for the same cycle may be for the next year or following year,” said Ashley during an interview to ThePapare.com.

SLC secretary Mohan de Silva said they are still hopeful Bangladesh will arrive as per schedule and take part in the series, which will start with the first Test, scheduled to begin on October 24.

“Sri Lanka is one of the first countries who have resumed cricket domestically during this pandemic period. We have been in negotiation with BCB and they have sent us their requirements. But as a country we have done extremely well to keep this pandemic under control. Therefore, there are strict health guidelines and protocols that we are expecting to follow,” said Mohan.

“However, we are grateful to authorities who have shown enthusiasm and encouraged us to resume international cricket here. So we are negotiating with BCB. And I am sure we will resolve this and expect the Bangladesh team to arrive in Sri Lanka without much delay,” he added.

The Tigers are scheduled to leave Dhaka for the island nation Sunday for the three-Test series, and despite the uncertainty, BCB and the players have been undergoing the due process to prepare themselves for the tour.

The cricketers are also engaged in experiencing the isolation that has been recommended by the BCB medical team.

The cricketers, who are staying at a hotel in the capital in order to maintain a bio-secure bubble, are under strict movements.

A floor in the hotel has been dedicated to the team while meals are also being served under strict protocol.

Bangladesh are scheduled to travel to Colombo with a month’s time in hand in order to set up a practice camp.

The first two Tests are likely to be held in Kandy followed by the third and final Test in Colombo.

The three Tests, part of the World Test Championship, were originally scheduled for July-August this year before being disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka fell into jeopardy last week after BCB president Nazmul Hasan rejected touring the island as per the health safety terms which were initially set.

Since then, SLC and concerned authorities of the country have been busy trying to work on the terms suggested by the BCB.
