BCB asks SLC to reschedule series

BCB president Nazmul Hasan briefs the media in Mirpur Monday BCB

BCB’s decision came about due to the mandatory 14-day quarantine that the touring team will have to undergo upon reaching the island

Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked Sri Lanka Cricket to reschedule Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan informed this to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Monday afternoon following an unofficial meeting with the board directors and high-ups.

BCB’s decision came about due to the mandatory 14-day strict quarantine that the touring team will have to undergo upon reaching the island.

“They have agreed to most of our conditions except one, that is the 14-day quarantine. We understand that this is something being controlled by their government owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and SLC and their sports ministry don't have much to do here. But for us it is not possible to send the team under this condition,” said Nazmul.

“Like I had previously said, it is not possible to play the Test championship under the guideline that they had given. They have agreed to all our conditions except for one, but that is the main to us, the 14-day quarantine, which actually is isolation, and the players cannot go out even from their own rooms. This isolation will have a big impact over the players’ mentality and it will require for them to recover from this. It is not possible for us to play this way,” the BCB boss explained.

“We were informed of this [Sunday] and [Monday] we got back at them to inform it is not possible for us to send the team under such guideline and that the series should be rescheduled. We shall have this series after the [Covid-19] situation improves and when there are no such conditions,” Nazmul added.

Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka fell into jeopardy after the BCB president earlier this month rejected touring the island nation as per the health safety terms which were initially set.

Since then, SLC and concerned authorities of the country were busy trying to work on terms suggested by the BCB.

Bangladesh were initially scheduled to travel to their south Asian counterparts last Sunday, and start with the series on October 24.

The Bangladesh preliminary squad for the tour has been in a residential training camp since September 20.

The camp will continue despite the tour not going ahead as planned.

The Bangladesh cricketers will be playing three practice matches – a couple of two-day matches and one three-day game.

Within this time, the board will work on the next course of plan, which is to resume domestic cricket.
