With the ban coming to an end, Shakib will once again be allowed to appear in the BCB premises and be available for selection

All-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s one-year suspension from cricket is set to end Wednesday and the southpaw will be bracing for competitive action from Thursday onwards.

Shakib was handed a ban for two years, with one year of that suspended, by International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit on October 29 last year for failing to report multiple corrupt approaches by a listed bookmaker.

The 33-year old accepted three charges of breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code 2.4.4 of failure to disclose to ACU the full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in corruption.

Bearing in mind Shakib admitted to the offences charged by the ICC ACU, there was no option for the Bangladesh cricketer to appeal against the ICC verdict and thus serve a minimum one-year ban.

With the ban coming to an end, Shakib will once again be allowed to appear in the BCB premises and be available for selection.

Shakib is set to return to the circuit through in the Twenty20 tournament by Bangladesh Cricket Board, scheduled to commence on November 15.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan informed that Shakib, who is currently at his United States home with his family, will return to Dhaka by November 10.

“Shakib will come back by November 10. It can be earlier too, may be at least a week or 10 days ahead of the tournament. It is confirmed that he will be part of a team and will play the tournament,” Nazmul said to the media earlier this week.

Shakib’s return to the arena could have been made in Sri Lanka had Bangladesh toured the island nation for the three-match Test series.

Bangladesh were scheduled to tour Sri Lanka last month for the series that was scheduled to start on October 24.

The board was planning to make Shakib play the second Test of the series, and thus the cricketer started individual training at his at his alma mater, Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan.

However, BCB’s decision of not sending the team to Sri Lanka due to tough Covid-19 health safety protocol saw Shakib return to the US to his family.

Shakib has been lucky in that Bangladesh didn’t play all that often in his absence.

Since his ban was imposed last October, Bangladesh played only 14 international matches – four Tests, three ODIs and seven T20Is.

As far as domestic competition in the country is concerned, the all-rounder missed out on the special edition of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 and the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, which remains suspended following the first round of games.

Cricket in the country has been on hold since mid-March due to Covid-19 until the national team regrouped for the tour of Sri Lanka.

As the tour was cancelled, BCB arranged a three-team 50-over tournament that was completed earlier this week.

International matches missed by Shakib:

2 Tests against India – November 2019

3 T20Is against India – November 2019

1 Test against Pakistan – February 2020

1 Test against Zimbabwe – February 2020

2 T20Is against Pakistan – January 2020

3 ODIs against Zimbabwe – March 2020

2 T20Is against Zimbabwe – March 2020
