Shakib criticized for potential Covid-19 protocol breach

Shakib al Hasan was seen inaugurating a super shop Friday, right after a few hours of his arrival in Dhaka, raising questions as to whether the Bangladesh all-rounder followed Covid-19 quarantine protocols set for passengers arriving in the country

Shakib reached Dhaka early Friday and by afternoon was found busy attending an inauguration ceremony of a super shop

Maverick all-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s return to Dhaka this time was supposed to be special.

The Bangladesh cricket superstar had set foot in the country for the first time since being freed of the International Cricket Council ban.

The cricket fraternity and supporters were jubilant for Shakib’s return to the Bangladeshi capital from the United States.

But the pleasure was only short lived as Shakib pushed himself into yet another controversy over not following the Covid-19 protocol of the county set for people arriving from aboard.

Shakib reached Dhaka early Friday and by afternoon was found busy attending an inauguration ceremony of a super shop.

Shakib was immediately found in hot water for not following the Covid-19 protocol and the ceremony itself was found not to abide by the health safety measures as crowd gathered in huge numbers to watch the cricketer without any social distancing.

Ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan regained top position in the ODI all-rounders' ranking as the latest International Cricket Council ranking revealed the Bangladeshi leading the list by a substantial margin.

The activity coming from an iconic figure in the shape of Shakib has irked a major part of the society given that the country is battling hard against the Covid-19 pandemic since March.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently addressed the concerned authorities to ensure the quarantine protocol of the passengers arriving in the country as the world prepares for the second wave of the novel coronavirus.

“Normally when a passenger does not have a corona negative certificate the airport authority prescribes an institutional quarantine. However, if the passenger has the corona negative certificate on arrival, we prescribe them to stay at home quarantine by their own responsibility,” Dr Shahrier Sajjad, duty doctor at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, was quoted as saying by a leading newspaper of the country.

“Although it is difficult for us to monitor whether they are staying at their home or not, it’s the person’s responsibility to follow that.”

Cases are ample where special permission was sought for reduced quarantine from the authorities, and obtained.

An individual in order to obtain the permission has to undergo Covid-19 test upon reaching the country and the process takes at least a day or two to complete.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s one-year suspension from cricket is set to end Wednesday and the southpaw will be bracing for competitive action from Thursday onwards.

In cricket, Bangladesh Cricket Board was seen obtaining such permission for the overseas members of the national team management ahead of the side’s scheduled tour of Sri Lanka in September.

Last week, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury while addressing the media mentioned of such “special permission” that will be obtained on behalf of the cricketers who would reach Dhaka from abroad ahead of the Twenty20 tournament and will not have adequate time for quarantine.

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Mahmudullah will soon travel to Pakistan to participate in the final leg of the Pakistan Super League T20 and will return home only a week before the domestic T20 tournament.

A 36-member Nepal football team reached Dhaka Thursday to play two Fifa tier-1 international friendlies against host Bangladesh.

The touring side underwent Covid-19 tests after arriving to the capital and would stay in quarantine at a hotel until the test reports arrive.

Given the time frame of Shakib’s arrival to Dhaka, at around 2:30am Friday, and the event in the afternoon on the same day, chances are minimum that Shakib underwent a Covid-19 test in the land let alone fulfill the remainder of the protocols for special permission.

Meanwhile BCB director and chairman of cricket operations committee Akram Khan rejected taking any responsibility for Shakib’s action.

“Our cricketers at the moment are not in the bio-bubble for which it totally depends on Shakib where he will go. It is his responsibility. We cannot take the responsibility for this,” said Akram to the media Friday.
