Dhaka, Rajshahi and Barishal were the other three teams who were eager to get Mashrafe

Gemcon Khulna roped in Mashrafe bin Mortaza in their squad for the ongoing Bangabandhu T20 Cup as they won a lottery to get the talismanic leader.

As many as four teams had shown their interest to take Mashrafe after he became fit and ultimately a lottery took place to decide who may get the service of the veteran right-arm pacer.

Beximco Dhaka, Minister Group Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal were the other three teams who were eager to get the experienced campaigner, and only Gazi Group Chattogram were not interested to acquire the services of the former Bangladesh captain.

Gemcon Sports managing director Kazi Inam Ahmed expressed their delight, saying, “We, Gemcon Khulna, are very much excited and delighted that we have picked Mashrafe bin Mortaza through the lottery system among four teams. Mashrafe has not played in any Khulna franchise, not even in any Bangladesh Premier League edition as well. In that sense it’s a big achievement for us that Mashrafe, who is from Khulna division and a Minister of Parliament from Narail region, will play for Khulna team in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup.

“Mashrafe is always a big impact player. So I think it will be a real motivation for the rest of the team. I hope Mashrafe will play well in the remainder of the tournament and our team will improve more with Mashrafe’s inclusion.”

Earlier Mashrafe had passed the required fitness test in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Sunday.

Former Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza returned to cricket after a break of almost eight months.

Bangladesh Cricket Board trainer Tushar Kanti Howleder confirmed that the 37-year old has passed the required mark.

“We can't give the exact score of the fitness test but Mashrafe passed well,” informed the BCB trainer.

Mashrafe’s name was not in the players’ draft list due to his injury but after the draft chief selector Minhajul Abedin informed that the all-rounder may take part in the tournament depending on his fitness and demand from any participating team.

BCB also informed at that time that if more than one team wanted to take him then a lottery would take place.

Mashrafe has picked up 146 wickets in 163 T20s so far in stints for teams like Dhaka Gladiators, Comilla Victorians and Dhaka Platoon.
