Navy, Army win on opening day

Josephites will take on Police at 9am while Army will face Air Force at 10:30am Monday

The Bangabandhu Bijoy Dibosh Basketball Tournament 2020 got underway Sunday with the participation of six teams at Dhanmondi Basketball Gymnasium in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Navy dominated Josephites Club in a one-sided 111-22 defeat in the tournament opener, the Navy leading 46-9 heading into the first half break.

Shamsuzzaman top-scored for Navy with 25 points, his teammate Oliver Mercy netted 14 points while Abdullah caged six points for the losing side.

It was a much more competitive affair in the second game as Bangladesh Army beat Dhumketu Club 91-74.

Army led at the intense first half 47-32.

Raim cages among his 33 points for Dhumketu as Tareq looks on 

Army’s Wadud was the highest scorer with 28 points while his teammate Tonu caged 22 points.

Raim’s 33 impressive points went to vein for Dhumketu, whose Tareq netted 17 points. 

Josephites will get the opportunity to bounce back Monday when they take on Bangladesh Police at 9am while Army will look to maintain their winning run against Bangladesh Air Force at 10:30am.

The tournament has been organized by Bangladesh Basketball Federation to mark the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the historic Victory Day.

The federation has undertaken health measures due to the novel coronavirus, and players and officials of all the teams have had to submit Covid-19 tests before getting the go-ahead.
